2D/3D Indeterminate Forms, 2025

A cyanotype records a way of perceiving the world that is different than a camera or the eye. It's an elegant match for this series that merges chance and science and denies a single source of truth. A mathematical proof is labeled ‘indeterminate’ when its value cannot be determined; it is defined by its inability to be defined. This series attempts to visually “work the proof” through the language of light and shadow. Thin strips of mirrored Mylar film are arranged on photosensitized paper then exposed to bright UV light. The strips’ razor-thin edges and distorted faces create delicate micro-reflections that add glitches to the swooping forms that at times seem to mimic indeterminate expressions themselves (0/0, 0 x ∞, ∞/∞, 0^0, ∞-∞). While the concept of infinity is both a utopian promise and a paradox, each cyanotype is a unique record of emergence -- a solution just out of reach.
